The African studies of Yunnan University have a long history. As early as the 1950s, under the auspices of the famous Yunnan Arabic language speaking scholar, professor Na Zhong, Yunnan University has begun teaching and researching on Africa and the Middle East. Professor Na Zhong also served as the first President of the China African History Association, founded in 1980. In the 1980’s, Professor Zhao Ruifang and professor Wu Jide from Yunnan University participated in the preparation of the China African history research institute and the compilation of three volumes of the history of Africa.

In 1991, Professor Liu Hongwu returned from studying in Nigeria and formally established a new field of African studies in Yunnan University. He began to recruit graduate students in African studies in 1996 and began to recruit doctoral students in 2000. To improve the development of African studies of Yunnan University, the Center for Asian and African Studies was established in 1998. Based on the previous work, the Center for African Studies of Yunnan University (CASYNU) was formally established in 2007, and Professor Liu Hongwu was the founding director of the center.

CASYNU has been selected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of PRC (MFA) for the “China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Plan” and “China-Africa Think Tanks 10+10 Partnership Plan” in 2011 and 2013 respectively, and selected by Ministry of Education (MOE) as the Key Base for Regional and Country-Specific Studies and the Research Center for China-South Africa People-to-people Exchanges in 2017. Currently, There are 11 full-time researchers and 15 part-time researchers in the center.

After decades of accumulation and development, the CASYNU has gradually formed its own characteristics in the field of African studies. Firstly, Yunnan University has become an important organization to train high-level talents for China’s African studies. Up to now, there have been more than 100 PhD students and MA students graduated from the center and some of them have become influential scholars in China. Secondly, it carries out the research from the perspective of culture, especially focuses on the cultural identity in the state building of Africa. Thirdly, it has long adhered to the studies of African national history and special subject history, and to explore the special significance of China-Africa relations in the context of dialogue among world civilizations. Fourthly, combining with Yunnan University’s cultural diversity and biodiversity research advantages, it has expanded its research on indigenous knowledge, ethnic issues, development issues, environmental issues, poverty reduction and terrorism in Africa. Fifthly, as an academic support institution for “China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Plan”, “China-Africa Think Tanks 10+10 Partnership Plan”, “China-South Africa High Level People-to-people Exchange Mechanism” and as the Key Base for Regional and Country-Specific Studies, based on the profound humanistic heritage of Yunnan University and the talent advantages of international studies, CASYNU has established extensive cooperation and exchanges with many foreign research institutions.

In recent years, CASYNU has undertaken a number of national and provincial research projects, and published several monographs and more than 100 papers on African studies. The center has become an influential African Studies organization in China.
